GOALS OF SENSORY TUNING

  • Develop body awareness to identify and understand emotions.
  • Develop skills to self-regulate emotions through sensory modulation.
  • Introduce and maintain the use of a sensory diet. With time, increase the use of the sensory diet, the quality and effectiveness of the sensory diet, and the range of the sensory diet.
  • Develop skills in self-expression of emotions and moods to communicate respectfully with other parties their feelings and perspectives.
  • Develop listening skills to listen with attention and respect to others’ perspectives and emotions with the end goal of resolution in mind.
  • Develop self trust and reliance on personal skills to emotionally self-regulate before entering a situation or environment or social setting as a means of prevention of dysregulating emotions and challenging coping behaviours as a result of these unmanaged emotions.
  • Develop competency in self-regulation during times of extreme distress as a means of crisis intervention.

  • Improve self-esteem through the enhancement of self-worth, self-respect, competence and confidence in their ability to self-modulate to alleviate stress and uncomfortable emotions to enable respectful communication.
  • Develop self-awareness through body awareness, sensory modulation and self-expression to better understand their internal world and effectively generate better feeling emotions and moods.
  • Foster interpersonal skill development to improve social connection and feelings of belonging.
  • Develop skills in the parent to assist the child or young person to tune into their body to identify their emotions. 
  • Develop the skills and capacity of the parent to help the child to self-regulate for prevention and crisis intervention when both hyper- and hypo-aroused to de-escalate a heightened situation and to alert and enliven and motivate the child when low, respectively.
  • To develop knowledge and skills to collectively build a diverse, effective sensory kit/s for the child for different needs and situations, and to create a feeling of comfort, safety and security for the child in a sensory retreat space in the home and in the school if needed.
